Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. At least 10 years of experience as a Federal, State or local law enforcement officer; as a Federal or State court Judge; as a Federal, State or local government attorney; or have ten years of progressive supervisory experience in an investigative public agency similar to an inspector general's office.

Recruitment Notes

Miami-Dade County is seeking a progressive, experienced, and results-oriented Inspector General to lead the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The staff includes seasoned investigators, auditors, contract oversight specialists and administrative support totaling 39 positions. The OIG is authorized to detect, investigate and prevent fraud, waste, mismanagement and abuse of power in County projects, programs or contracts, and can carry out these goals while autonomous, independent and insulated from political influences. It is one of a few OIGs in the country that has jurisdiction to investigate officials at any level, including elected officials. The organization and administration of the Office of the Inspector General shall be sufficiently independent to assure that no interference or influence external to the Office adversely affects the independence and objectivity of the Inspector General.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate their ability to be a leader with vision, able to set strategy for the Office of Inspector General, pursue the mission with integrity and have the ability to engage respectfully with the Board of County Commissioners (Board) and the Administration.

Additional responsibilities will include but are not limited to: providing direction and supervision for audits, investigations, and management reviews relating to programs and operations. The Inspector General will keep the Board and the Administration informed of fraud, abuses, and deficiencies through written reports. The Inspector General will assess the reliability and validity of the information provided by all sources and ensure that the appropriate resources are allocated between audit, investigative, and other accountability activities. Since 2007, through an Interlocal Agreement between the Miami-Dade Public School District and Miami-Dade County, the Miami-Dade County Inspector General has also served as the Inspector General for the Miami-Dade Public School District.

For Fiscal Year 2019-20, the County's adopted budget is $8.9 billion dollars. Miami-Dade County is internationally recognized for its achievement in implementing a results-oriented government culture. The County's Strategic Business Plans are developed with significant input from the community in setting priorities.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Inspector General shall possess a Bachelor's degree and ten years of experience in any one, or a combination of the following fields:

Federal, State, or Local law enforcement officer

Federal or State Court Judge

Federal, State or Local government attorney

Ten years progressive supervisory experience in an investigative public agency similar to an inspector general's office are required.

The ideal candidate must have managed and completed complex investigations involving allegations of fraud, theft, deception and conspiracy; and the demonstrated ability to work with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.
