UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT, MIDDLE DISTRICT OF FLORIDA

Tampa Division

Public Notice for the Appointment of a Magistrate Judge

The Middle District of Florida will appoint a full-time magistrate judge for the Tampa division. The annual salary is $188,692.00. The term of office is eight years, beginning January 31, 2018. The magistrate judge must remain in the Tampa division.

The Middle District uses a magistrate judge to the maximum extent permissible under 28 U.S.C § 636. The minimum qualifications for appointment as a magistrate judge are established in 28 U.S.C. § 631(b) and in Chapter 1 of the Regulations of the Judicial Conference establishing standards and procedures for the appointment and re-appointment of United States Magistrate Judges.

Comprising lawyers and other members of the community, a Merit Selection Panel will review each application. After an interview of selected applicants, the panel will recommend to the district judges the five applicants whom the panel considers best qualified. The district court will interview the five finalists but will appoint the new magistrate judge only after a satisfactory FBI full-field investigation and a satisfactory IRS tax check of the proposed appointee. The appointee must comply with the financial disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, 5 U.S.C. app. 4 §§ 101-111.

The required application is available at each division’s office of the Clerk of the Court or at www.flmd.uscourts.gov. Each applicant must submit, by mail or by hand-delivery, an original, completed application and five copies, including a recent and in-depth writing sample to the Clerk of the Court. Also, each applicant must e-mail an electronic version of the application to resume_orl@flmd.uscourts.gov. Letters of recommendation are neither required nor encouraged. The Clerk must receive each original application, regardless of the mode of delivery, at the following address by 5:00 p.m. on TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2017.
