Purpose of Position

In the Office of General Counsel, we help our clients solve problems that affect their diverse educational, research and business missions. Formally, we are a full-service legal department composed of 31 attorneys in three practice groups: Business Law, General Law, and Health Law. In partnership with other campus-based attorneys, we serve all 13 institutions of the UT System.

The selected candidate will report to the Senior Associate General Counsel & Managing Attorney for General Law. Within the legal oversight responsibilities delegated by the Board of Regents to the Vice Chancellor & General Counsel, the candidate will provide legal advice, representation, and counsel on matters as diverse as employment law, constitutional law, tort, insurance, the Texas Public Information Act, NCAA compliance, Title IX and higher education law (including student affairs law).

Essential Functions

  Provide legal advice, representation, counsel, and training on, among other areas, employment law, constitutional law, tort, insurance, public information, NCAA compliance, Title IX and higher education law (including student affairs law). [50%]

Draft legal opinions, memoranda and other work product. [10%]

Travel out of town and overnight, as required. [20%]

Propose, draft, interpret, and apply relevant UT System policies. [10%]

Review and interpret proposed or new state and federal legislation, regulations, and sub-regulatory guidance. [5%]

Perform other duties as assigned. [5%]

Required Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.

Licensure to practice law in Texas, or full licensure in Texas within 12 months of hire.

At least 7 years’ experience as a licensed, practicing attorney.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of legal principles applicable to Texas state government agencies.

Experience representing institutions of higher education, systems of higher education and/or similarly complex and decentralized entities.

Working Conditions

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
